Droves of new golfers have been taking up the game in recent months, as golf establishes itself as the ideal social-distancing sport for the modern era.<\/p>\n

So, I put the question to members of our\u00a0How To Hit Every Shot Facebook group, a free instruction group\u00a0that you can join yourself right here.\u00a0Here\u2019s what they came back with:<\/p>\n

1. Don\u2019t become a range rat<\/h3>\n

This is actually great advice. Always remember that while the driving range is great practice,\u00a0don\u2019t get too comfortable there.<\/a>\u00a0Don\u2019t be afraid to hit the course!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

\n

2. Taking lessons is worth the money<\/h3>\n

Equipment upgrades are great and necessary, but sometimes, rather than spending $100+ on yet another item, spending that money\u00a0on a lesson can pay big dividends.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

3. Start with chip shots<\/h3>\n

Starting with short chip shots, when you\u2019re an ultra newcomer, can be helpful in learning the basic (and most important) foundation of the golf swing: Learning how to put the clubface on the golf ball.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

4. Get familiar with basic etiquette<\/h3>\n

I\u2019m not going an etiquette stickler. But it\u2019s important to learn some of the\u00a0basic things. That way, you won\u2019t step in my line.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

5. Master your grip<\/h3>\n

Starting with a good grip,\u00a0like you see above, is so important.\u00a0A bad grip\u00a0can cause so many issues in your golf swing.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

6. Get \u201cfitted\u201d for clubs<\/h3>\n

You don\u2019t need to get fit right away, but once you start to get serious,\u00a0poorly-fit clubs\u00a0can cause long-term issues in your golf swing.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

\n

7. Keep your head down on putts<\/h3>\n

Get used to listening\u00a0to the ball go into the hole without necessarily looking up to see it drop.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

8. Aim for the center of the green and not the flags<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s true for the pros, and it\u2019s true for beginners, too.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

9. Have a short memory<\/h3>\n

Bad shots will come. They\u2019ll come often. That\u2019s just golf. Don\u2019t take them too seriously and don\u2019t dwell on them. Get a few lessons.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

10. Don\u2019t bounce around coaches<\/h3>\n

Find a coach you like, of course, but once you do, stick with them. Don\u2019t go bouncing around looking for a quick fix.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

11. Find your tempo early<\/h3>\n

Good tempo, aka the speed and rhythm with which you swing the golf club, can cover for a lot of ills early. Swinging fast is fine,\u00a0but as long as you\u2019re always swinging smoothly.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

12. Patience<\/h3>\n

There\u2019ll be days when you play that will leave you wondering why you play at all. There\u2019ll be times when you feel like you\u2019re not improving. Golf is a strange game, but say patient and it will always reward you.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

\n

13. Don\u2019t play hero ball<\/h3>\n

Hit the shot you know you can hit, not the one-in-10 shot that you are capable of hitting. Golf is a game of misses.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

14. Always stay balanced<\/h3>\n

When you\u2019re starting out, swaying back and forth in your golf swing will only make it harder to put the clubface on the ball. Stay\u00a0balanced during your swing,\u00a0and always make sure to stick your finish.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

15. Pick up after eight strokes<\/h3>\n

Play golf however you want, but if you\u2019re just starting out, don\u2019t be afraid of picking after eight shots. Don\u2019t feel obligated to finish every hole, just go out and have fun trying to hit good shots.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

\n

16. Tee it forward<\/h3>\n

This is important for\u00a0all<\/em>\u00a0golfers.\u00a0Most courses have a number of different tee boxes. Play the right ones for your ability, and when you\u2019re starting out, that means teeing it forward.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

17. Find a book as a guide<\/h3>\n

There are a ton of great ones;\u00a0here are a few of my favorites.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

18. Never forget the fundamentals<\/h3>\n

Nailing down your setup\u00a0will fix issues in your golf swing before they even arise.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

19. Play fast and don\u2019t lose your temper<\/h3>\n

Most golfers don\u2019t care how good you are at the game. You can be a great golfer\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0a fun golfer to play around with. Keep your temper under control and play fast. Then you\u2019ll be a joy to play with.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

20. Have fun<\/h3>\n
